In the 1970s, 80s and 90s, Pozzi Ginori dominated the square sanitary ware market with two product lines, known as Italo/Italica and Square (which was later renamed Italo Duo in the monobloc version with ceramic cistern). Thanks to these sanitary wares, colours entered many people’s bathrooms. Italo Italica series Pozzi Ginori – The big toilet seat cover
Italica is considered the large sanitary ware series par excellence. We have dedicated an in-depth look at its history in the post “Large sanitary ware (old models) and their unobtainable toilet seat covers“. Its almost rectangular shape and dimensions (54/55) require a perfectly fitting WC seat, with measurements of 50×36 and centre distance of 15/15.5. Square series Pozzi Ginori – The old square toilet seat cover.
Often confused with Italica because of its very similar rectangular and square shape, Square is 4/5 cm shorter than Italica’s large dimensions. It represents for Pozzi-Ginori what Conca represents for Ideal Standard and symbolises the success of sales on the market in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Thirty years of deserved success for the rectangular series, together with Conca, among the most imitated. At the time of its market launch, its square shape was the symbol of modern bathrooms. This series of Pozzi Ginori sanitary ware was also produced in all the colours of the time: Maldives Blue, Whispering Blue, Heraldic Blue, Navy Blue, Champagne, Fern Green, Mondrian Grey, Whispering Grey, Brown, Black, Oriental Pink, Whispering Pink and Pomegranate Red. ITALO DUO series Pozzi Ginori. The square toilet seat cover with 20 cm wheelbase
The shape is that of Square and is often mistaken for that sanitary ware. We discussed this in the post “Sanitary wares and their covers with non-standard centre distance (part 2)“. This post reads: ‘This series by Pozzi Ginori called Italo Duo is often confused with another series by the ceramic company (SQUARE) because of its rectangular shape, but the discriminating factor is the centre distance, which is a good 19/20 cm. We could have included this series in the article on old, discontinued rectangular sanitary ware (you can read it here at the following link [ clik here ]), but we decided to emphasise its non-standard wheelbase feature. It was produced in several colours, apart from clearly white, Champagne, Brown and Whisper Pink. We have discovered that an old-fashioned square sanitary ware, perhaps coloured, is not always Italica. And the more we talk about it, the more we realise that a large, square toilet seat cover bought quickly and carelessly in some mall or DIY store will probably not be as accurate for your toilet as initially thought. Apart from the aesthetic side, which will probably not look so good, the practical side also plays a not inconsiderable role; if the toilet seat is not accurate, its service life will be very short.
