TOILET SEATS

D-shaped sanitary ware. Which are the most successful and oldest series? Are toilet seats of these older models still available?

Throughout the history of bathroom design, there have been several forms of sanitary ware that have been more or less successful depending on the period. We have seen in several previous posts some of these formal types. From sanitary ware and toilet seats with shapes ovals/elongatedrectangularhexagonal/octogonalroundovals e also several with odd shapes and some with shapes embroidered by curves. Today we will discover a shape that in its simplicity modernised the shape of sanitary ware at the turn of the ’80s and ’90s. Today we are going to talk about the D-Shape, the older series that made it popular until today.

CLODIA series Dolomite

Serie CLODIA Dolomite

The iconic series in this formal sanitary ware category is: Clodia. bestsellers Ceramica Dolomite which achieved incredible sales figures also thanks to this series, is often remembered for its special feature of the stepped upper floor (which we mentioned in the post: “Sanitary ware with a sloping top and their toilet covers“) but its D shape, designed by Antonio Bullo, marked a turning point in the history of sanitary ware in the ’80s. On this toilet, if you accept our advice, you should only fit the old original model in white polyester-coated wood (we call it old because now a thermoset version is offered that is not perfect for the Clodia step), which we managed to find from an old manufacturer and is still available in the store at the following link [ clik here ]. However, some variants are available, including the soft close version at the following link [ clik here ]

ESEDRA series Ideal Standard

Serie ESEDRA Ideal Standard

In the early 2000s, the Ceramica Ideal Standard decided to introduce a new D-shaped ceramic series and called it Esedra. It is perhaps the last series produced by the company to have reached the sales volumes of the ‘five sisters’, and is considered by many in the industry to be the heir to the tile series par excellence (also by Ideal Standard, [ clik here ]) the TESI series. It is the first D-shape presented by this ceramic house that was beginning to attract a lot of public interest at that time (see Clodia just looked at) Characterised by a large upper shelf and clean, modern forms. Initially positioned detached from the rear wall. In recent times, it has been modified and it has become possible to position it against the wall and thus also become a ceramic series flush with the wall, as the new style trends in bathroom furnishings require of a sanitary ware to be considered modern. The toilet seat therefore requires fixing from above (EXPA) to be installed. It has been presented over time both with a thermoset wrap-around toilet seat and with a version in coated wood: both European white and Ideal Standard white. You can find them all in the Sintesibagno online store at the following link [ clik here ]

SFERA NUOVA series Catalano

It is the evolution of the first edition that Catalano launched in the ’90s under the name of: Sfera. That ceramic series will enable future success for this Civita Castellana-based ceramic company. In the post: ”Catalano and the discontinued old series. Where can I find toilet seat covers?” We have already described it like this: “This is the first version of SFERA, which today, as new versions have been made, we call old. We could already see the direction of the style that modern and recent sanitary ware series would take in the years to come up to the present day. It achieved incredible sales success. Its coverwtar has precise and not very large measurements, you can find it at the following. Not to be confused with the new Sfera toilet seat cover, which has a centre distance of no less than 22 cm.”. In the early 2000s, the company saw the success of the series and restyled it, launching the Sfera system. The vase takes a shape in line with the new flush-to-wall trends, we talked about it in the post: ”The floor-standing sanitary ware is flush with the wall. Soft, wrap-around shapes. Top-mounted toilet seats are required.(expa)”. The D-shape (characterised by a slight half-moon back curve of the first series) was retained, but modified with two sharp 90° angles. The dimensions of the toilet seat cover have been lengthened, the shape of the donut hole has become an oval, but above all, the seat anchorage centre distance has changed from 15/16 cm (classic measure) to a measure (considered a special centre distance) of 22 cm. Utmost care therefore when buying a toilet seat cover. If you are looking for the toilet seat cover for the Sfera series old model you can find it at the following link [ clik here ], while if you are looking for the Sfera toilet seat cover new model you can find it at the following link [ clik here ]
